The top leadership of the opposition coalition today officially opened the way for former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa to join the coalition popularly known as Ukawa. Mr Freeman Mbowe (Chadema), Prof Ibrahim Lipumba (CUF), James Mbatia (NCCR-Mageuzi) and Emmanuel Makaidi of NLD told a joint press conference in Dar es Salaam that Mr Lowassa and other Tanzanians were welcome to join efforts to bring change in the country by removing CCM from power.
Their declaration suggests the political parties may have sealed a deal with the former powerful premier to defect to the opposition and run or the presidency after losing out on the same ticket in the CCM race. Mr Lowassa’s name was dropped early in the process, eliciting hue and cry from his supporters who said their candidate was treated unfairly. Mr Lowassa is expected to announce his defection any time this week.
