Fugitive drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has been caught, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto confirmed Friday morning.
Misión cumplida: lo tenemos. Quiero informar a los mexicanos que Joaquín Guzmán Loera ha sido detenido.
— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) January 8, 2016
Nieto announced his capture on Twitter in Spanish. The tweet states, "Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained."
The Mexican drug lord escaped from a maximum-security prison on July 11 via a sophisticated mile-long tunnel that opened up in his cell's shower. There has been an active manhunt for him ever since.
Guzman was first jailed after being extradited from Guatemala in 1993 and escaped from a maximum security prison in 2001. Thirteen years later he was arrested again in the seaside resort town of Mazatlan and escaped again about 16 months later.
Guzman is believed to have a net worth of about $1 billion. No further details have been released.
